Intermolecular Named Winner of 2008 R&D 100 Award For Tempus High-Productivity Combinatorial Workflow

R&D Magazine Recognizes Exceptional Innovation that ‘Delivers on Its Promises’

SAN JOSE, Calif. — October 1, 2008 — Intermolecular, Inc. announced today that it has won a 2008 R&D 100 Award from R&D Magazine for its Tempus™ High-Productivity Combinatorial™ (HPC) R&D Workflow.

Since 1963, the awards annually have recognized the most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace. Previous award-winning technologies include the flashcube (1965), the automated teller machine (1973), the halogen lamp (1974), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the printer (1986), Taxol anti-cancer drug (1993) and HDTV (1998).

Intermolecular’s Tempus HPC™ R&D Workflow platform combines advanced combinatorial processing equipment and informatics data management and analytical software into tailored R&D workflows that greatly improve efficiency at each stage of the overall R&D process for chipmakers, materials suppliers and equipment manufacturers. The system includes three tools, the F-10, F-20 and F-30, for formulation, discovery, and screening of fluid materials, as well as for primary and/or secondary screening and integration and scale-up screening.

“The increasingly urgent need to introduce new materials and processing techniques into semiconductor manufacturing is one of the major challenges facing the industry,” said Intermolecular CEO David Lazovsky. “But chipmakers are understandably cautious about changing their highly complex production processes to introduce new elements because alteration in one area can have unintended consequences in others. The antidote to this risk is hard, experimental data generated during research and development that demonstrates how new materials perform under varying, real-world, high-volume manufacturing conditions. Intermolecular's Tempus R&D platform provides that antidote.”

The R&D 100 Awards are selected by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. For winning companies, an R&D 100 Award provides a mark of excellence that their product or technology is one of the most innovative ideas of the year. The publication and its online portal serve research scientists, engineers and other technical staff members at high-tech industrial companies and public and private laboratories around the world.

"The R&D 100 Awards recognize the extensive efforts by the individuals who conceptualize, design and produce the final products," said Martha Walz, editor-in-chief of R&D Magazine. "These prestigious awards give public acknowledgement that, not only is the technology or product exceptionally innovative and fills a need in the market, but that it also delivers on its promises."
