Bruce McWilliams, Ph.D.

Bruce McWilliams is chairman of Tessera Technologies (TSRA) and was its chief executive officer from 1999 to 2008.  He established and implemented its growth strategy based on providing technology to the mobile phone and semiconductor industries. During his tenure as CEO, the company achieved compounded revenue and operating profit growth exceeding 50% annually which led to Tessera being cited by Business Week as the Second Hottest Growing Company in America in 2006.  Tessera was also cited by Electronic Business as the 4th Best Small Electronics Company in the US in 2006.  Today over 20 billion semiconductor devices have been shipped using Tessera’s technology.

McWilliams has more than 20 years of executive and technical management experience in the semiconductor industry. He has held numerous executive management positions, including senior vice president at Flextronics International, a position he assumed upon Flextronics’ acquisition of nCHIP, Inc., a multi-chip module packaging company he co-founded and where he served as its CEO. McWilliams also founded and was CEO of S-Vision, a silicon chip-based display company.

  He is a member of the board of directors for Intermolecular, a semiconductor materials company, and NemoTEK, a mobile phone camera manufacturing company. He is a Trustee of Carnegie-Mellon University and a member of its advisory boards for Physics and Human & Computer Interaction.  

In 2005, he was given Ernst & Young’s Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year award. He holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Carnegie Mellon University.  

  He is married with two sons and enjoys golf and backpacking.  He has a strong interest in science and education and endowed the “Bruce and Astrid McWilliams Center for Cosmology” and the “McWilliams Fellowship for Graduate Students in Science” at Carnegie Mellon University.
