Memory IDM
Evolving a Product by Evaluating Over 4,000 Unique Memory Cells
The Challenge
The customer recognized significant market potential and competitive advantage in developing a new capability to its non-volatile memory (NVM) technology. The architecture and controllers were proven—but the memory cell had to evolve quickly to the best-performing and most-manufacturable design.
The Project
Intermolecular’s Tempus™ technology, which enables learning rates of more than 100 times conventional R&D, was used to explore and characterize 4,045 different NVM cells in just 18 months. A single design, with by far the best performance, was identified.
Results
The customer achieved its research goals on this project and has cited the NVM product as an important strategic advance. The Tempus system has demonstrated consistently high performance over 10,000 cycles. The joint customer-Intermolecular team made a breakthrough in integrating a new material system, and the new memory cell design is being targeted for manufacturing.
